WiMAX Forum(R) appoints UQ Communications to its Board of Directors


TOKYO, November 11, 2009 - UQ Communications, the sole nationwide WiMAX(TM) carrier in Japan, has been enhancing its commercial WiMAX network and working closely with the WiMAX Forum(R) to enable the worldwide WiMAX standard.


Recognizing UQ Communications' effort to help spread WiMAX services internationally, the WiMAX Forum announced that UQ Communications CTO, Dr. Fumio Watanabe, is appointed as a member to the WiMAX Forum Board of Directors.


"The appointment of UQ Communications to the Board of Directors reflects the WiMAX Forum's expectation that UQ, as well as Japanese industry, will play a critical role in expanding the wireless broadband market and creating remarkable benefits for users worldwide," stated Dr. Watanabe. "I am honored to represent UQ Communications and expect to work cooperatively with a wide range of participants in shaping the global WiMAX ecosystem and the future of mobile broadband."


With its appointment to the board and its ongoing attention to customer needs in Japan, UQ Communications will continue to contribute to the creation of a true mobile broadband experience throughout the region and all over the world.

Biography of Dr. Fumio Watanabe


Dr. Fumio Watanabe

Dr. Watanabe received B.S. and PhD degrees in electronic engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1975 and 1980, respectively. He joined KDD in 1980. He was an EVP of KDD R&D Laboratories Inc from 1998 and the General Manager of Radio Access System Development Department of KDDI from 2001. He is now the Executive Director & General Manager of Network Technology Division of KDDI.  He is also CTO of UQ Communications Inc.

He was engaged in research and development on antennas, satellite communication systems, and mobile communication systems including IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced and WiMAX. He has been also active in international standardization of mobile systems. He is now responsible for network planning of fixed & mobile businesses and technology development activities at the corporate level in KDDI, as well as for technical activities in UQ Communications.

He received Piero Fanti International Prize in 1989, the R & D Awards of Radio Systems awarded by RCR in 1991, and the meritorious Awards on ITU activities from ITU-AJ in 2001. He is chairman of the Broadband Wireless Access Committee in ARIB. He is Fellow of the IEIEC.
