Starting investigation to adopt WiMAX Release 2.1

TOKYO, October 31, 2012 - UQ Communications Inc. (Headquarter: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Akio Nozaka), announced that UQ starts investigation to adopt WiMAX Release 2.1 announced by WiMAX Forum yesterday.

While WiMAX release 2.1 keeps affinity with existing WiMAX standard, it aims to offer faster speed capability and to develop a grater ecosystem by having compatibility with TD-LTE.

UQ has been offering High-speed mobile internet service "UQ WiMAX" since our business launch on February 2009 and expanding service coverage  to serve 93% of nationwide population. UQ's variety of devices, especially WiMAX Speed Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi personal hotspot), become popular, and the number of subscribers has reached 3.6M at the end of September 2012.

UQ starts investigation for offering next-generation service “WiMAX 2+” based on WiMAX Release 2.1 standard. With "WiMAX2+", UQ offers much faster data speeds and wide coverage by keeping seamless compatibility with existing nationwide WiMAX.

Corresponding to the increasing demand for mobile data, UQ is asking MIC for assigning additional 20MHz spectrum license which would be used for the WiMAX Release 2.1.
